Physical Education

In Physical Education we help our students to:

  • Develop the resilience, responsibility and self-motivation to achieve their personal best through having high aspirations for themselves.
  • Learn to improve their own and others’ work through developing a greater knowledge of skills, techniques and tactics and using these to analyse performance, recognising where improvements need to be made.
  • Build character and develop values such as fairness, honesty and respect.
  • Learn to communicate effectively and with confidence, showing empathy when working with others and role modelling positive behaviours.
  • Learn how to work independently and as part of a team and develop the ability to motivate and positively influence others.
  • Show commitment to developing healthy active lifestyle habits and making physical activity an integral part of their lives.

We ensure that all students have the opportunity to participate in a range of physical activities and competitions beyond the school day.

All students have two lessons of Physical Education per week with those choosing to study it as a GCSE option having an additional three lessons per week in Years 9 to 11.

Students in Year 4 and Year 7 will have one lesson of Swimming and one lesson of Physical Education per week, remaining year groups will have a double lesson of Physical Education per week.

Each activity runs for six weeks to ensure continuity and students will have two ‘Student Voice’ weeks in the year where they get to opt into alternative activities to their usual curriculum.

Curriculum - Physical Education - Years 9, 10 and 11

Students in Years 9, 10 and 11 extend their physical and social development through tackling complex and demanding activities. They will learn to use and develop a variety of strategies and tactics to overcome opponents in individual and team games.

Students are encouraged to get involved in a range of activities that develop personal fitness and make decisions about adopting a healthy, active lifestyle.

In Years 9 to 11 students choose which options they would like to follow based upon their own interests. There are a wide range of activities to choose from, including the accredited Sports Leaders Level One course in Year 9 and Level Two course in Year 10.
