Governor Visits


Protocol for Governor Visits

Before the visit

  • Identify the area for the visit through consultation with the governing body (there will be X visits per year) to agree number of visits – suggested minimum figure of 3. These should be linked to the school development plan and/or be specific visits by eg the SEN governor
  • Negotiate timetable with the head and relevant staff
  • Identify suitable slots to include possible feedback
  • Circulate the purpose of the visit to staff

During the visit

  • How are you going to be introduced?
  • Observe/participate in the session with reference to your objectives
  • Ask any questions as they arise
  • Raise any concerns with the Head should be arise, not with the teacher
  • Leave the visit positively

After the visit

  • Agree a summary of the report
  • Ask any questions you need to clear up
  • Discuss any feedback with staff involved
  • Where possible, reports to be distributed with the Head’s report
  • If possible, give feedback to the Head.
