Aspiration Phase Curriculum

In Years 9, 10 and 11 the National Curriculum requirements for Key Stage 4 courses are followed. All pupils study courses leading to GCSE or alternative forms of accreditation such as BTEC.  Pupils choose optional courses in addition to their core curriculum to personalise their experience at Key Stage 4.

All pupils from Year 9 onwards are able to study the following subjects required for Progress 8 and the English Baccalaureate:

  • English Language and English Literature
  • Mathematics
  • Double or Triple Science
  • A Modern Foreign Language
  • History and/or Geography

Optional GCSE and vocational courses which pupils enjoy and achieve in are also offered.Currently these include:

  • Art GCSE
  • Business Studies GCSE
  • Food Technology GCSE
  • Graphic Design - Level 2 
  • Physical Education GCSE

All pupils in Years 9, 10 and 11 continue to have lessons in Physical Education, PSHCERE/Citizenship and computer-based personalised learning. Pupils whose first language is not English are strongly encouraged to take GCSEs in their first language.

Pupils in Years 9 and 10 are also offered Enrichment options. These are offered every Friday afternoon and will also be available to pupils in Year 11 from next year. These options allow pupils to pursue interests which will not necessarily lead to GCSEs, although additional qualifications can be taken. The emphasis in Enrichment is on pupils enjoying a range of experiences, gaining confidence and preparing for life after school. Educational visits, visiting speakers and some work experience are also possible in Enrichment. The options offer a range of experiences and are organised flexibly to meet the needs of different groups of pupils. Options currently offered are as follows:

  • Healthy Living – Physical Education and Food Technology lead most of the activities in this area. Physical Education allows pupils to acquire sports leadership qualifications, improve their fitness and enjoy a range of activities.
  • Food is about preparation for life, giving pupils a better understanding of nutrition and giving them the opportunity to develop practical skills which they can use for the rest of their lives.
  • Expressive Arts – this area includes elements of Art, Music, Drama and Dance, enabling pupils to prepare for productions, shows and presentations. Pupils will have the opportunity to be creative, to build confidence, to acquire new skills and to develop existing ones. Some pupils will have the opportunity to complete an additional GCSE in Art.

The curriculum is further enriched by event days and an events week at the end of the school year. These involve all pupils and staff in an impressive array of activities and experiences which enrich learning and encourage pupils’ social, spiritual, cultural and moral development.

For 20 minutes every day, form tutors, assisted by support staff, use reflection time to focus on individual learning and progress, discuss current affairs and read. 

Personal skills (PSHCERE/Citizenship)

It is the aim of the school to promote the personal and social development of all its pupils and for pupils to be effective citizens. Personal Skills (PSHCERE) is concerned with qualities and attitudes, knowledge and understanding and abilities and skills in relation to oneself and others. As such it is an integral part of all aspects of school life, inside and outside the classroom. All teachers are involved in encouraging effective personal and social development, and the whole curriculum aims to promote this.
