Sky Try Girls Festival Winners 2018

Sky Try Girls Festival Winners 2018

We started our rugby club in 2015 and have entered the Huddersfield Giants Touch rugby competition every year since. Over the four years we have been training, the girls have developed their confidence, skills and rugby fitness. On Friday 4th May, after months of training, eleven of our Year 7, 8 and 9 students went to once again take part in the competition. The girls played against teams who play regularly outside of school but even they couldn't stop our Almondbury Falcons from being unbeaten in the rounds and making it to the FINAL for the first time in our history!  The final was played against Manor Croft and all the games were ten minutes each but the final felt like twenty! There were some fantastic examples of rugby being played with the girls’ good ball handling and dummies. One dummy and a perfectly timed pass lead to an excellent try in the corner for us, putting us one up but Manor Croft were not going to sit back. They came back at us with everything they had and created a number of opportunities to score. It took sheer relentlessness from our girls not to concede. In the end we conceded a turnover ball very close to our try line in the last few minutes and this gave Manor Croft 6 attempts from close range. The pressure and our solid defence stopped Manor Croft from scoring but they didn't stop coming at us until the final whistle blew!

Not only did our Almondbury girls make it to the final, they WON the final with what can only be described as sheer heart and determination.

We had no reserve players so the girls had to dig as deep as ANY team I have ever worked with in almost 20 years of teaching. They worked so hard for each other, despite extreme fatigue, and thoroughly deserved the win. Credit must also go to the girls at Manor Croft who played a hard and fair game and were also a credit to their school.
