Year 4 Bridge Challenge

As part of their structures theme, Year 4 have been studying bridges. They have looked at the different type of bridge, what bridges are made of and some common components that they share. A competition was set up. In groups, children experimented with different materials, designs and joints to see what might influence their own design ideas. After these short focused tasks, the group then built their ultimate bridge, hoping their bridge would be free standing -  span 30cm and hold the heaviest weight in the classroom. “We doubled the base of our bridge to make it stronger. We used strong piers to hold the bridge up. Ours was called ‘The Rainbow Bridge’. I enjoyed finishing and working in a team,” said Kaylem. As bridge design continues to develop here’s hoping we have one of the new architects amongst us.
